homework (copia a mano en tu libreta)

Hummingbirds are amazing little birds. They are the smallest of all birds and weigh less than even a penny. The Bee Hummingbird, at barely more than two inches long, is the smallest bird in the world!

Unlike most birds, hummingbirds have iridescent feathers.

Iridescent feathers glitter and shine in the sun. Hummingbirds are often dazzling combinations of greens and reds or greens and blues. Others are violet, orange, golden, silver or other combinations only Mother Nature could dream up. All hummingbirds have long bills to insert into flowers. Some hummingbirds have special bills to fit in specific flowers.

Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backwards.

Hummingbirds are also unique among bird species in that they drink nectar from flowers. You can attract hummingbirds to your yard with special feeders that are filled with sugar water. These
feeders are usually bright red in color because hummingbirds are attracted to red.

TAREA PARA VIERNES 22 DE MAYO (Copia en tu libreta a mano el texto y contesta las preguntas)

A woodpecker is a kind of bird. Woodpeckers are found all over the world except in the North and South poles, Australia, and New Zealand. There are over 200 different kinds of woodpeckers. The two largest woodpeckers, the Imperial Woodpecker and the Ivory-billed Woodpecker are most likely extinct. Animals that are extinct are no longer found on Earth.

Woodpeckers have sharp bills for drilling into wood, and short, stiff tails which help prop them up against tree trunks and branches. Woodpeckers also have very long tongues, which help them get at insects deep within trees. Woodpeckers are often heard drumming loudly on trees before they are seen. Woodpeckers can even become pests if they learn to drum on siding of a house.

Woodpeckers can easily be attracted to backyard bird feeders with sunflower seeds or suet. Suet is a kind of animal fat that is very tasty to woodpeckers and other birds.

Why do woodpeckers have long tongues?

When do woodpeckers sometimes become pests?

Which is NOT true about woodpeckers?

Woodpeckers are often .....

  1. found in the North Pole.
  2. found in Australia.
  3. seen before they are heard.
  4.  heard before they are seen

The two largest woodpeckers in the world are ......

  1. most likely no longer on Earth.
  2.  pests.
  3. found all over the world.
  4. normally found at bird feeders

homework for wednesday 20th Read, copy and answer the quesions.

The Amazon is the world's largest tropical rainforest. It covers an area of nearly 2.8 million square miles, which is nearly the size of the continent of Australia. The Amazon Rainforest gets its life from the majestic Amazon River, the world's second largest river, which runs directly through the heart of the region. The rainforest itself is simply the drainage basin for the river and its many tributaries. The vast forest itself consists of four layers, each featuring its own ecosystems and specially adapted plants and animals.

The forest floor is the lowest region. Since only two percent of the sunlight filters through the top layers to the understory, very few plants grow here. The forest floor, however, is rich with rotting vegetation and the bodies of dead organisms, which are quickly broken down into nutrients integrated into the soil. Tree roots stay close to these available nutrients and decomposers such as millipedes and earthworms use these nutrients for food.

The understory is the layer above the forest floor. Much like the forest floor, only about 2- 5 percent of the sunlight reaches this shadowy realm. Many of the plants in the understory have large, broad leaves to collect as much sunlight as possible. The understory is so thick that there is very little air movement. As a result, plants rely on insects and animals to pollinate their flowers.

The layer above the understory is the canopy. This is where much of the action in the rainforest occurs. Many canopy leaves have specially adapted leaves which form "drip tips". Drip tips allow water to flow off the leaves which prevents mosses, fungi, and lichens from occupying the leaves. Leaves in the canopy are very dense and filter about 80 percent of the sunlight. The canopy is where the wealth of the rainforest's fruits and flowers grow. Bromeliads, cup-like plants, provide drinking pools for animals and breeding locations for tree frogs.

The emergent layer is above the canopy, and is the top layer of the rainforest. Trees in the emergent layer break through the canopy and may reach heights of 200 feet. Leaves in the emergent layer are small and covered with a special wax to hold water. Seeds are blown to other parts of the forest. Trees which rise to the emergent layer are massive. Many are braced by huge buttress roots. Trunks can be 16 feet in circumference. Many animals that survive in the emergent layer never touch the ground.

1.-Which question is answered in the introductory paragraph?

a)What kind of animals live in the Amazon Rainforest?
b)How many layers exist in the Amazon Rainforest?
c)Where does the Amazon River begin?
d)What is the world's largest river?

2,-Much of the final paragraph discusses....

a)The size of the trees and leaves in the emergent layer
b)The size of the animals in the emergent layer
c)The types of animals found in the emergent layer
d)The types of trees and leaves found in the emergent layer

3.-Based on the reading, what can you INFER about the Amazon Rainforest?

a)Most of the rainforest's fruits grow on the forest floor
b)The canopy gets little sunlight
c)More plant life exists where there is more sunlight.
d)A lot of plant life exists on the forest floor.

4.-Which of the following can you INFER from the passage?

a)Decomposers are usually found in the upper layers of the rainforest
b)Plants in the upper layers must rely on insects and animals to pollinate their flowers
c)Most of the action in the rainforest ccurs in the lower layers
d) Leaves in the lower layers of the rainforest must have larger leaves.

5.-Which paragraph tells about nutrients in the soil?

a)Second
b)First
c)Third
d)Fourth

Swan and Lewis
Greentree Wine Company, California, USA
Greentree Wine Company has been producing premium wine in the Napa Valley since 1980 and markets wine under the Brown Canyon, Swan & Lewis and Stratclith labels. In addition, GWC produces several private labels for both domestic and international customers. Last year, GWC bottled over 500,000 cases between their own brands, private labels and custom bottling contracts.
The Swan and Lewis label, which retails for about $10, grew by 53 percent in 2012. Swan and Lewis includes a Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Zinfandel and Pinot Noir. The package was recently updated and includes the slogan, "Stick your nose in our business."
The company is headed by Tony Swan and Glen Lewis who created the Swan and Lewis label in 1990. Paul Jones is responsible for wine production and has worked exclusively for the firm since 1992.

The primary reason Swan & Lewis experienced record growth last year is that key distributors got behind the brand. Swan said the secret of their rapid growth was "being with the right distributors at the right time." He credits the rise in the value of the euro relative to the U.S. dollar for making reasonably priced California wines more attractive to distributors that previously were interested mostly in imports. "A lot of our distributors were strong in imports but felt it wasn't a bad idea to have something from California," he said.
"We need to be with medium-sized distributors, and we need to be with medium-sized distributors that actually care about us, which is not the same thing."
Swan commented that with many wines designed to retail for $10, much of the emphasis is on marketing instead of what the wine tastes like. "We depend on the wine," he said. "I think $10 is an interesting price point," Swan said. "It's a price where almost anybody can afford to buy but high enough where you can do something slightly interesting as far as the wine is concerned. I think the American consumer has become more sophisticated and is looking at interesting wines for around $10."

Read the article about a North American wine company and answer the following questions.

1. What is Paul Jones responsible for?
2. Who heads the company?
3. Is the company successful?
4. What reason does Tony Swan give for distributors buying more wine produced in the US last year?
5. Does Tony Swan think that the average American expects a bottle of wine that costs $10 to taste good?.
